In early 1970s Beijing, adults were too busy with the "Cultural Revolution" to pay attention to children, and with schools closed and nothing to do, boys from military compounds, represented prominently by Ma Xiaojun (played by Xia Yu), sought their own amusement, indulging in horseplay, fights, mischief, and other ways to waste their excess hormones. One of Ma Xiaojun's hobbies was to sneak into neighbors' houses with a universal key when no one was home. It was in this way that he first laid eyes on the girl Milan (played by Ning Jing) through her photograph. Through the yard's "leader" Liu Yiku (played by Geng Le), Ma Xiaojun saw Milan again, who he had previously caught a glance of at the artillery bureau, and he began to see her as his dream girl. However, in Milan's eyes, Ma Xiaojun was just an immature boy; the man she favored was mature, steady, and handsome Liu Yiku. Thus, Ma Xiaojun entered a bittersweet phase of his youth. This film is adapted from Wang Shuo's short story "Fierce Animals." Xia Yu won the Best Actor (Silver Lion) at the 51st Venice International Film Festival for this role.
