In 2020, a not-so-distant future year, the world has undergone many changes. In that era, human boxing is no longer allowed; instead, various robots take to the ring to continue this thrilling sport and entertain the public. Former boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) seems to be somewhat adapting to this change as he quickly adjusts to the times, bringing trained robots to the ring repeatedly. However, misfortune strikes as he unexpectedly suffers a defeat, accumulates significant debt, and then receives news of his ex-girlfriend's sudden death, leading him to meet his son for the first time—11-year-old Max (Dakota Goyo).
An unexpected encounter leads Max to discover an outdated sparring robot named Atom. With Max's insistence, Charlie agrees to let Atom participate in matches, only to find that this "scrap" not only withstands blows but possesses fighting potential and talent. Thus, the Kenton father-son duo and their robot embark on a new journey…
