This film is based on the notorious 1993 Bre-X gold mine fraud case. Bre-X Gold Corporation was a Canadian mining company established in a basement, listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange in July 1989, at that time just a junk stock priced at about 25 cents per share. Later, the company acquired mining rights in Indonesia, and by mixing gold powder into the rocks, they created the illusion of a very high gold content in the ore, causing the price of the company's stock to skyrocket. By April 1996, their stock price had soared to 200 dollars. In October 1996, the fraudulent activities of Bre-X Gold Corporation were exposed, but the assets of thousands of shareholders had already fallen into the pockets of the company's founders and geologists. The story of "Gold Mine" follows modern prospector Kenny Wells, played by Matthew McConaughey, who yearns to discover a major mine. Guided by this dream, Wells embarks on a high-stakes adventure with a similarly unlucky geologist to seek gold deep in an unexplored rainforest in Indonesia. Bryce Dallas Howard will portray Wells' girlfriend Kay, who continuously supports her boyfriend's exploration efforts, but their relationship faces severe trials during the search for gold.
