The wealthy young lady Liu Zhenglian (Lin Yu) unfortunately suffers from leprosy. Her father Liu Yuanwai (Luo Wei) decides to invite the poor scholar Li Xiaowen (Ling Bo) to be her husband, intending to spread the disease. Zhenglian reveals the truth, and Xiaowen, moved by her genuine feelings, resolves to return home to inform his mother and welcome Zhenglian back. Liu Yuanwai discovers that Zhenglian's illness has not disappeared and, fearing it will tarnish the family reputation, furiously locks her in a stone house. Despairing, Zhenglian ultimately drinks poison in a bid to end her life...
