An ordinary young man, Joey (played by Laurence Harvey), falls in love with a wealthy heiress, Susan (played by Jean Simmons). Although their relationship faces strong opposition from Susan's family, they eventually overcome many obstacles and get married. However, married life is not as happy as Joey had imagined. He starts working at Susan's father's company, where he often faces ridicule from his superiors and colleagues, making his work life quite unpleasant. On the other hand, their values differ greatly, leading to frequent intense arguments between them. When Joey discovers that his wife has taken a lover, he decides to pursue the life he wants freely. He elopes with a girl named Nora (played by Honor Blackman), who has feelings for him.
