In August 1945, after Japan's surrender, the Chinese Communist Party, to promote cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party and avoid civil war, responded to Chiang Kai-shek's (played by Sun Feihu) invitation. Mao Zedong (played by Gu Yue) flew alone to Chongqing to "discuss national affairs" with Chiang. Mao's decisive arrival left Chiang at a loss, and he had no choice but to meet with Mao at his residence, marking the beginning of the negotiations. Chiang's intention to negotiate was insincere; in reality, he was actively preparing for a civil war.
