On July 29, 1996, after successfully conducting its last nuclear test, China announced to the world that it would temporarily halt nuclear tests starting July 30. When the news reached across the ocean, the renowned Chinese-American physicist Professor Yang Zhenning sensitively realized that this was a special memorial day carefully chosen by the Chinese government and people to commemorate the "founding father of the two bombs," Deng Jiaxian, who had tragically passed away ten years prior on that very day. As a lifelong friend and classmate of Deng Jiaxian, Yang Zhenning could not help but shed tears. In 1958, Dr. Deng Jiaxian, who returned to China after studying in the U.S., took on the secret task of developing nuclear weapons, thus beginning his life of anonymity and assuming the responsibility for the theoretical design of China's atomic bomb. As a theoretical physicist, Deng led the theoretical design department at the Nuclear Weapons Research Institute, overcoming the challenges of having no theoretical references or technical data to eventually achieve a breakthrough, providing the theoretical design for China’s first atomic bomb, and making significant contributions. On October 16, 1964, China successfully detonated its first atomic bomb in the western region, announcing to the world its military technological capabilities, altering the global balance of political and military power and enhancing China's international status and prestige, with Deng Jiaxian playing an indispensable role. Following this, Deng organized and led the theoretical design work for China's first hydrogen bomb. On June 17, 1967, China successfully detonated its first hydrogen bomb, shocking the world. Subsequently, Deng Jiaxian made significant contributions to the development of neutron bombs and the miniaturization of nuclear weapons. In 1971, after meticulous negotiation and arrangements by Premier Zhou Enlai, Yang Zhenning finally returned to his homeland after being away for over twenty years. At the top of his list of people he wanted to see was his schoolmate and dear friend Deng Jiaxian. However, at that time, Deng was undergoing "criticism" in a study class at the northwest test base. When he received a notification from the central government and traveled a long distance back to the Beijing Hotel to meet his old friend Yang Zhenning, he found himself unable to answer simple questions like "What work are you doing? Why haven’t you had any news since your return?" and was left in an awkward position. Yang Zhenning then changed his approach, asking, "I've heard that the atomic and hydrogen bombs were developed with the help of two Americans. Is that true?" This left Deng Jiaxian at a loss for words. Filled with doubt and regret, Yang Zhenning left Beijing to visit Shanghai. Soon after learning of this, Premier Zhou called Deng Jiaxian and asked him to convey to Yang Zhenning, "China’s ‘two bombs’ were completely developed by the Chinese, with no foreign assistance." When Yang Zhenning received this letter from Deng Jiaxian in the banquet hall of a Shanghai hotel, he was so moved that he couldn't contain himself and retreated to the restroom, crying bitterly. He firmly believed that the extraordinarily talented Deng Jiaxian was indeed the creator and a great contributor to China’s "two bombs." In the mid-1970s, for reasons of confidentiality and military preparedness, the Nuclear Weapons Research Institute was secretly relocated to the northern mountainous region of Sichuan to continue its work on nuclear weapons development. After the Gang of Four was crushed, Deng Jiaxian, affected by nuclear radiation, had become extremely weak, and later was diagnosed with malignant tumors and cancer that had spread throughout his body. Nevertheless, he continued to work relentlessly, racing against death as he entered the final sprint phase. He returned to the vast desert where China’s first atomic bomb had been detonated, with the wind stirring up sand, the desolation of the desert surrounding him, and reflecting on the past; the world political landscape had undergone profound changes, yet his loyalty to his country and people remained steadfast. After participating in the final underground nuclear test, Deng Jiaxian finally fell ill and was sent to the Beijing Military General Hospital for treatment. During nearly thirty years of working secretly on nuclear weapons research, Deng Jiaxian not only sacrificed his personal fame and life, but his wife Xu Lushi and children also endured unspeakable mental torment and hardships. However, they silently bore this until Deng was forced to leave his post and return to being an ordinary husband and father. But it seemed that everything was too late. In the summer of 1986, Deng Jiaxian entered the final journey of his life. He entrusted his final arrangements to the central authorities and colleagues, facing death calmly. He had a guard accompany him to Tiananmen Square for a final farewell to his country and people. In his dying moments, his lifelong friend Yang Zhenning arrived at his bedside, but Deng was already in a coma; when he regained consciousness, Yang had flown back to the U.S., leaving behind a lifelong regret. His daughter, who was studying in the U.S., rushed back to her father after hearing the news of his critical condition from the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. When she burst into the intensive care unit, breathless and saw her father, Deng Jiaxian, frail and close to death, both father and daughter wept uncontrollably. In the golden autumn of 2009, as the People's Republic of China celebrated its sixtieth anniversary, the spirit of "founding father of the two bombs" Deng Jiaxian seemed to come again to the magnificent Tiananmen Square, arriving at the solemn People's Heroes Monument. He sat alone on the steps of the monument, gazing affectionately at the flocks of doves soaring in the sky. Amid the cooing of the doves, tears streamed down Deng Jiaxian's face.
