In 1948, Chilean President Gabriel González Videla, who came to power with the support of the Chilean Communist Party, fell into conflict with his communist co-governors, subsequently declaring communism illegal and initiating a widespread campaign of arrests and persecution. Poet and senator Pablo Neruda publicly criticized President González Videla in writing, placing himself in danger and having to seek refuge within the country before ultimately escaping to Mexico in 1949. Pablo Larraín’s unique biographical film focuses on this historical period, skillfully blending factual history with fictional elements. In the film, Neruda is pursued by a detective named Oscar Peluchonneau, who vows to capture the poet, and his narration runs throughout the film as an off-screen voice.
