On a midsummer night when the Duke’s father is away, the footman Jean (played by Colin Farrell) and the cook Christine (played by Samantha Morton) tease each other, while Julie (played by Jessica Chastain) eagerly wants Jean to dance with her. At first, Jean refuses due to their differing social statuses, but eventually the two become intimate. Later, Julie feels confused and helpless, and Jean's attitude towards her deteriorates drastically, leading to mutual insults and disdain. Julie begs Jean to take her away, even stealing money from her father, which is discovered by Jean's lover, the cook Christine. To prevent them from leaving, Christine kills Julie's pet bird. Heartbroken, Julie finds herself in a deadlock, and just then, Julie's father returns. Jean quickly recognizes the reality and returns to his original status. Julie is filled with anger and despair, feeling trapped, while Jean, to ensure his own safety, encourages Julie to take a desperate path.
