This film is divided into two chapters, "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise," telling the epic love story of the protagonist, Aurora (played by Laura Soveral), throughout her tumultuous life. The capricious Aurora is now elderly, living with her Black maid. Their neighbor is a kind elderly woman named Pila (played by Teresa Madruga), who often expresses her goodwill towards Aurora, but Aurora does not appreciate it. After Aurora's death, Pila and the maid discover a secret of hers— a letter she wrote to her old lover during her lifetime. Pila decides to send this letter to Aurora's lover, which unveils a long-buried past involving an unforgettable love and adventure story set in a colonial Africa. This film won the Alfred Award at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2012. The German silent film pioneer Murnau made a movie of the same name in 1931, and this time director Miguel Gomes pays homage to the master Murnau.
