"Winchester '73" is the best of the five famous western films from the 1950s made by James Stewart and Anthony Mann (the other four are "Bend of the River," "The Man From Laramie," "The Naked Spur," and "The Far Country"), and is considered a major contributor to the resurgence of western film box office sales. The film also broke new ground in history: from this film forward, stars began to rely on revenue sharing from box office profits rather than receiving salaries (even if they were exceptionally high). This strategy made James Stewart a lot of money and forever changed the way deals were made in Hollywood. The film itself is also impressive. Anthony Mann’s sharp and psychologically rich direction portrays a formidable man caught in perplexing circumstances. Cowboy Lin McAdam (played by James Stewart) embarks on a series of adventures in pursuit of a valuable Winchester 1873 repeating rifle. The final scene is extremely spectacular: between sheer cliffs, two men draw their guns and shoot at each other, with the majestic landscape leaving a lasting impression. "Winchester '73" placed James Stewart among the top ten box office stars, despite doubts about his acting abilities from the studios prior to this. Like the true Winchester Model 1873, "Winchester '73" is also a "one of a thousand."
