The story takes place in 1940, as the iron heel of the German army treads on French soil, leaving this beautiful country in ruins. In a house, an old man (Jean-Marie Robain) and his niece (Nicole Stéphane) rely on each other, and the war has not disturbed their peaceful life. One day, a German officer named Vernet (Howard Vernon) comes to live with the old man and his niece. Due to pride and principle, the old man and his niece maintain silence towards him. However, as time passes, they find that Vernet is not only polite but also holds a special respect and affection for French culture. Gradually, genuine feelings develop between the man and the woman living under the same roof. Yet, a huge barrier and silence stand between them; how will they handle this ill-timed love?
