The story takes place in Algeria in the 1930s. At the age of 9, Younes is taken to live with his uncle, a pharmacist in Oran, where he is given a new name, Jonas. He grows up alongside the young people in the village of Rio Salado and becomes friends with them. Among this group of friends is a girl named Emily, whom everyone falls in love with. A great love story develops between Jonas and her, but soon this relationship is disrupted by the conflicts arising from national turmoil.
