Anna (Emily Browning), a well-behaved girl, is devastated by the death of her ailing mother in a fire, even attempting suicide. After a period of mental recovery, she is allowed to return to her long-absent home, where her writer father Stephen (David Strathairn), her close sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel), and her future stepmother—her mother's former nurse Rachel (Elizabeth Banks)—await her. During this time, Anna continues to see her mother's horrific figure, while her friend Matt (Jesse Moss) claims to have witnessed everything on the night of the fire. Various signs indicate that Anna's mother did not die by accident, and the sisters naturally suspect Rachel as the culprit.
Before long, Matt is murdered. Dark clouds again hover over Anna's family. This poor, nearly broken girl is lost between reality and illusion...
