This drama tells the story set in a Beijing courtyard from the 1960s to the 1990s. He Yuzhu is a cook in the steel factory canteen, known for his kindness and righteousness, but he lacks a filter and is nicknamed "Silly Zhu." Living in the same courtyard is steelworker Qin Huairu, who values filial piety and is capable; she has one son and two daughters, but her husband died from a workplace injury, making life quite difficult for her. The courtyard also houses the selfish film projector operator Xu Damao, who is the antagonist to Silly Zhu. Additionally, there are three respected elder workers in the courtyard, known as the "Three Uncles," who mediate any neighborhood disputes. Although Silly Zhu seems unorthodox, he has a kind heart and generously supports Qin Huairu's family and takes care of the elderly, deaf Granny. Through his interactions with his neighbors, Silly Zhu gradually matures, taking on manly responsibilities and duties. Under the breeze of reform and opening up, Silly Zhu opens a restaurant and transforms the courtyard into a nursing home, living happily and harmoniously with all his "neighborhood family."
