In a small town in the American West, Sheriff Franklin Hunt (played by Kurt Russell) shoots a suspicious drifter at night. He then calls in the town doctor, Samantha (played by Lili Simmons), to treat the suspect. Late at night, a teamster is brutally murdered by a mysterious intruder, and both the suspect and Samantha go missing. Franklin feels the situation is serious and gathers Samantha's husband, Arthur O'Dwyer (played by Patrick Wilson), and other villagers for a meeting at the local tavern. They learn that the events of last night may be the work of a mysterious cave-dweller. These savages engage in incestuous relationships and even eat humans, including their own mothers. Despite the immense danger, Franklin and the other brave men are determined to venture into the cave-dwellers' lair to rescue the kidnapped villagers; this journey is fraught with peril…
