In 1986, in Dallas, Texas, homophobic electrician Ron Woodroof (played by Matthew McConaughey) discovers that he has "the gay disease" - AIDS, with only 30 days left to live. The AZT (zidovudine) he uses is the only anti-AIDS drug approved by the FDA at that time, but it is highly toxic. In order to survive, Ron begins to research various AIDS prescriptions and alternative therapies, even smuggling unapproved drugs from around the world. With the help of doctor Dr. Saks (played by Jennifer Garner) and transgender gay Rayon (played by Jared Leto), Ron starts an underground organization called the "Dallas Buyers Club" to provide more "alternative therapies" for AIDS patients, many of whom are gay men seeking his assistance. His actions naturally face opposition and pressure from the FDA and pharmaceutical companies. Ron ultimately passed away in September 1992, 2557 days after being told he had only 30 days to live. During this nearly seven-year period, he relentlessly fought against the disease, the FDA, and drug companies, enjoying a life truly lived... This film is based on a true story that tells how a terminally ill patient strives to survive and saves thousands of others facing the same plight, nominated for Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor/Supporting Actor and winning a total of 29 awards.
