Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a high school student at a Catholic school, and he is also a member of New York's top high school basketball team. He hangs out with three other players on the team, skipping classes, doing drugs, stealing, and fighting, wasting their youth on the streets of New York. Jim keeps a record of his life in his "Basketball Diaries." Then, Jim's best friend Bobby dies of leukemia, which devastates him. Jim begins to experiment with psychedelic drugs due to a "surprise" from Nujon, and soon he becomes addicted to drugs. The lack of communication with his mother, the brutal education from the school’s priest, and the sexual harassment from the team’s coach all contribute to Jim sinking deeper into self-destruction. Each time he experiences withdrawal, they resort to desperate measures to get money for drugs, and Jim falls into the depths of depravity… This film is adapted from the autobiographical novel by writer and musician Jim Carroll.
