This film tells the love story of a woman entangled with several men. The singer Gertrud (played by Nina Pens Rode) finds out that her husband, Gustav Kanning (played by Bendt Rothe), will become a cabinet minister. Gertrud candidly confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him because he prioritizes his work over her love. Gustav asks her if she has found someone new, and she admits that she has. Afterward, she leaves home to meet her lover, the young musician Erland Jansson, and they share their innermost feelings, leading Gertrud to envision a beautiful future together. The next day, Gertrud attends a welcome banquet for the great poet Gabriel Lidman (played by Ebbe Rode). It turns out she had a brief affair with Lidman as well. Lidman wants to win Gertrud back, but she rejects him. He tells her that he knows Erland actually loves another person. Consequently, as Erland plays the piano and Gertrud sings, she faints. Gertrud then seeks out Erland again, hoping to go to Paris with him, but Erland refuses. Upon returning home, she encounters Lidman once more...
