This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Shen Congwen. The story takes place in the early Republic of China, in a small mountain town on the border of Xiangxi, where an old ferryman (played by Feng Hanyuan) guards a ferry, helping people cross the river. He lives solely with his granddaughter, Cui Cui (played by Dai Na). Seventeen years ago, Cui Cui's mother had an illegitimate child with a soldier stationed there, and later, both chose to die together. The old ferryman does not want Cui Cui to follow the same path; he hopes to entrust her to a reliable person. In the town of Chadong, the ferry owner Shun Shun has two sons—big brother Tian Bao (played by Liu Kui) and second brother Nao Song (played by Shi Lei). Both fall in love with Cui Cui, but she loves the second brother. On the night of the Dragon Boat Festival three years ago, Cui Cui met the second brother by chance, and the seeds of their feelings were quietly planted at that moment. Later, the two brothers decide to sing love songs to let Cui Cui choose. However, for various reasons, the songs never came. Instead, news of the big brother’s drowning arrives. Although the second brother still loves Cui Cui, he leaves out of spite after his brother’s death. On a stormy night, the old ferryman dies from depression. Cui Cui eventually understands many things, so she waits by the ferry for the second brother to return… This film won the Jury's Honorary Award at the 9th Montreal International Film Festival in Canada.
