After the September 18 Incident in 1931, Zhao Yiman (played by Shi Lianxing) was appointed by the party committee as the secretary of the Harbin General Labor Union, leading the workers of the electric vehicle factory in an anti-Japanese strike movement together with Lao Cao (played by Zhang Ping). Soon after, Lao Cao was captured and sacrificed. In 1934, Zhao served as a member of the CCP Zhuhe County Committee and secretary of the Tiebei District Committee, organizing the volunteer army to conduct guerrilla warfare against the Japanese invaders. In the fall, the peasant self-defense forces she led joined forces with the anti-Japanese troops led by Captain Wang (played by Wang Yan). When news of the Red Army's Long March reaching northern Shaanxi arrived, the troops held a celebration, but were unexpectedly surrounded by the enemy. Zhao Yiman led her team to break through the encirclement, but as the enemy forces increased, she ordered Captain Wang to take the main force to retreat while she led a part of the soldiers to cover them. Unfortunately, outnumbered and unable to resist, she was captured. Once Zhao Yiman was caught, the enemy believed they had caught a big fish and first subjected her to brutal torture, then threatened and seduced her, but Zhao Yiman displayed the heroic spirit of a Communist, refusing to speak until her death... This film won the Best Actress Award at the 1950 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
