In the late 1950s, the now best-selling author Inoue Kosaku (played by Hiroshi Ayaka) returns to his hometown of Yushima to visit his elderly parents amidst his busy schedule. Back in Tokyo, his wife Mitsu (played by Mariko Akama), eldest daughter Ikuko (played by Mimura), and younger daughter Noriko (played by Akiko Kikuchi) are tirelessly assisting him, while the rebellious youngest daughter Kotoko (played by Aoi Miyazaki) intentionally resists her father's authority. Shortly after returning to Tokyo, he receives the heartbreaking news of his father's passing (played by Rentaro Mikuni), leaving him overwhelmed with complex emotions. As time passes, the Inoue family experiences moments of togetherness and separation; the girls gradually grow up, leading their own lives and harboring their own concerns, while the once dominant Kosaku begins to taste the solitude that comes with aging. Meanwhile, his mother Yae (played by Kirin Kiki) experiences declining memory with age. Balancing his duty as a son with the unresolved resentment from his childhood of feeling “abandoned” by his mother, he navigates the unbreakable bond amid thousands of emotions… This film is adapted from the autobiographical novel "My Mother (わが母の記)" by Japanese author Yasushi Inoue, divided into three parts: "Under the Flower," "Moonlight," and "Snow Surface."
