Under the nightfall, the over-fifty prostitute Ah Chun (played by Tanaka Kinuyo) wanders the streets, and after entering a temple, she recalls her tumultuous and tragic early life.   In her youth, Ah Chun was a maid in a noble family. She fell in love with a low-ranking samurai, Katsunosuke, and when they were discovered having an affair, both Ah Chun and her parents were expelled from the city, while Katsunosuke was executed. In order to carry on the family line, Lord Matsudaira sent someone to select a concubine. Beautiful Ah Chun was chosen and became the lord's mistress. Soon, she gave birth to a son. The Matsudaira family rejoiced, and Ah Chun thought she had settled down. However, the legitimate wife was very jealous of Ah Chun, so the Matsudaira family sent her back home on the grounds that she ensnared the lord. To pay off debts, Ah Chun's father sold her to a brothel. A generous customer wanted to redeem her. However, this person was a counterfeiter and was soon arrested, leading to Ah Chun being thrown out of the brothel. Afterward, she experienced various hardships and ultimately found herself in a desperate situation on the streets. During her sickness and poverty, she learned that her son had become the lord...
