Doctor Kate (Sandra Bullock) moves away from her riverside cottage due to her busy work schedule. Before leaving, she places a letter in the mailbox, hoping the next tenant will help handle her mail. Soon after, she returns to the old place and discovers a letter from architect Alex (Keanu Reeves) inside the mailbox, leading to an exchange of letters. They realize they are living two years apart in time but are excited to become pen pals, experiencing each other's presence across different spaces. As their love grows, Alex decides he wants to meet Kate, but they have no idea what this time-crossing romance will entail.
