Marine Jack Patrick Ryan (played by Chris Pine) is a passionate young man with a strong sense of patriotism. While on a mission in Afghanistan, the helicopter he was on comes under enemy fire, leaving Jack severely injured and on the brink of death. During his recovery, he falls in love with the kind and beautiful medical student Cathy Muller (played by Keira Knightley). Meanwhile, he is recruited by CIA officer Thomas Harper (played by Kevin Costner) to monitor potential funding sources that could threaten national security as an analyst on Wall Street. With his identity and mission being highly confidential, Jack must keep quiet about his work even from his girlfriend, enduring various unexplainable doubts and speculations. One day, Jack discovers that Russia may be planning a potential terrorist attack against the U.S. through financial means.
