This HBO-produced film is another war realist piece by director John Irvin, known for "Hamburger Hill," set against the backdrop of World War II and the bloody Battle of the Hürtgen Forest. After an entire squad is wiped out by the enemy, the sole survivor, Private David Manning (Ron Eldard, "Deep Impact," "Four Brothers"), is promoted to sergeant. Unable to handle the pressure of leading new recruits, Manning requests to be discharged on the grounds of mental unfitness. However, his commander (Martin Donovan, "In Her Shoes") presents him with a condition: if Manning can lead a squad to capture a German outpost, his discharge request will be submitted. Yet in the cruel and relentless nature of war, what matters most is not victory, but how to survive the battlefield. While epic films about World War II like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Red Tide" may have overshadowed many, this film is absolutely a must-see and stands as one of the best war realist movies without any shortcomings.
