Philip (played by Angus Macfadyen) has long suffered from a secret: he is actually a homosexual. Finally, he decides he can no longer live in hiding and chooses to reveal this to his family. One day, Philip approaches his father, Owen (played by Brian Cox), and confesses his sexual orientation, shaking Owen's world to its core. It turns out that Owen is also a homosexual, but he chose to conform to societal expectations and marry Philip's mother, Rose (played by Eileen Atkins). However, after all these years, Owen has been tormented inside, and Philip's step forward comes as a revelation for him.
