The wizard Merlin (Nicol Williamson) bestowed upon King Arthur (Nigel Terry) a magical sword. Before his death, King Arthur thrust this sword into a stone and left a will that whoever could pull the sword from the stone would be qualified to become the King of England. Years passed quickly, and King Arthur's illegitimate son stood before the stone, effortlessly pulling out the sword and inheriting the throne, becoming the new King Arthur. He then married a woman named Guinevere (Cherie Lunghi) and established the Knights of the Round Table, ushering in the most glorious era in history. However, the good times were short-lived, as Guinevere fell in love with the Knight Lancelot (Nicholas Clay), and at the same time, scandals within the family threatened the king's rule.
