Alonzo (played by Denzel Washington) is an African American detective in the Drug Enforcement Administration, experienced and outstanding in his investigations, with a keen instinct for drug cases. He is known as "the Magic Eye." One day, a new colleague, Jake (played by Ethan Hawke), joins Alonzo's department. Jake follows Alonzo into every dark corner of the streets, discovering the bizarre nature of the city while slowly witnessing Alonzo's morally ambiguous methods of handling cases.
Although Alonzo is a detective, his methods straddle the boundaries of the law. He adheres to the principle of "fighting fire with fire," arming himself: seizing criminals' drugs to use himself, and ordering Jake to follow suit at gunpoint. He even shares an unusual relationship with drug dealers. On the other hand, he fiercely protects the young Jake, making his complex character difficult for Jake to comprehend.
