The film follows Guillermo Arriaga's unique multi-narrative technique, showcasing the different life experiences of five main characters through intersecting plots. In Portland, a woman named Silvia (played by Charlize Theron) is unable to escape the shadow of a childhood sin and seeks reconciliation with her family while trying to find a new path; a 16-year-old girl, Marianna, living in a small town on the Mexican border, desperately tries to reunite her estranged parents; lovers Gina and Nick find themselves trapped in a difficult affair; and a young girl, Maria, helps her parents forgive each other and find true love... All five individuals achieve self-redemption through their suffering and ultimately find the essence of life.
