In the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido, a weathered couple, Takushi Kobayashi (played by Koichi Sato) and Yoshiko (played by Kanako Higuchi), arrive. The couple originally ran a machinery manufacturing factory but were forced to close due to poor management. Yoshiko senses her husband's disappointment, so she asks Takushi to build a stone wall for their Western-style house. One night, a thief breaks into their home, and Yoshiko is injured in the confrontation. The doctor advises her to pay attention to her dilated cardiomyopathy, but Yoshiko keeps this fact from her husband and spends carefree dreamlike moments with Tohru Sugimoto (played by Shuhei Nomura), a young man who comes to help them build the stone wall, and his girlfriend Sae (played by Hana Sugisaki). What must come will eventually arrive; after sharing half a lifetime, there will always be a moment of farewell... This film is adapted from the novel "The Pearls of the Stone Man" (Japanese title: 石を積むひと) by American author Edward Mooney, Jr., published in 2002.
