Dorothy (Susan Lynch) and her boyfriend Tony (Iain Glen) have just attended his uncle's funeral. On the train back, a sulky Tony keeps blaming Dorothy for losing his golf club membership card, even though Dorothy insists she's never seen that damn membership card. Ignoring her protests, Tony becomes furious, hits Dorothy, and eventually jumps off the train, disappearing. Feeling wronged, Dorothy returns to their apartment alone, only to find it in chaos, as Tony had turned it upside down. The jerk even hung Dorothy's little dog outside on the balcony to vent his anger. Fortunately, the dog is rescued in time and survives, but Dorothy has had enough. She packs her things and leaves the place that has brought her so much sorrow. While waiting for the bus, she accidentally runs into the drunk Brian, who is violently attacking his girlfriend Patricia (Rachel Weisz). In a fit of anger, Dorothy picks up a stick and knocks Brian unconscious. Afterward, the frightened Patricia, in a state of panic, is dragged back to her home by the decisive Dorothy.
