In the twenty-second year of the Showa era, a family of three at a pawnshop in Iwanai, Hokkaido, was murdered, and the shop was burned down. Soon after, a typhoon struck, and the ship "Zengyun" sank in the Tsugaru Strait, claiming the lives of over 500 people. While verifying the identities of the victims from the maritime disaster, the police discovered two unidentified bodies with suspicious injuries. Investigations revealed that the two were Nakata (played by Ikki Minami) and Kijima (played by Mitsuo Ando), who had recently been released from Abashiri Prison and were last seen with a man named Inukai Takashi (played by Rentaro Mikuni). Detective Yumisaka (played by Junzaburo Ban) from the Hakodate police intuitively linked the case to Inukai, but Inukai seemed to have disappeared without a trace, and the case eventually went cold. Ten years later, the bodies of a prostitute, Yaeko Sugisaki (played by Sachiko Kyu), and a young man were recovered from the sea. Detective Tamimura (played by Takeru Takakura) determined that the two did not die by suicide, and the young man’s employer—industrialist Kyoichiro Tarumi—became a prime suspect. As the investigation deepened, the long-cold case from a decade ago began to resurface... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Beniko Mizukami and has been adapted for television three times. The film won the Best Screenplay Award at the 1966 Blue Ribbon Awards, the Best Actor Award (Rentaro Mikuni) at the 1966 Film Journal Awards, and five awards including Best Actor, Best Actress (Sachiko Kyu), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Junzaburo Ban) at the 1966 Daily Film Awards.
