The story takes place in London, England in 1936. Richie (played by Paul Bettany) is a bank businessman with a bright future. However, his career success cannot compensate for the shortcomings in his marriage; the relationship between him and his wife Madeline (played by Olivia Williams) has long been merely a formality. Madeline's sister Tina (played by Helena Bonham Carter) comes to stay with them. Tina is an artist whose free-spirited demeanor and quirky personality quickly capture Richie's attention. As time goes by, the two decide to be honest with each other, crossing ethical and moral boundaries.
