During the Edo period under the Tokugawa shogunate, in the Hane domain of豊後, young samurai Dan'no Shozaburo (played by Junichi Okada) gets into a dispute with a friend over a trivial matter, leading to a drawn sword and injury inflicted on the other. The elder Nagane Hyouemon (played by Kazumi Kuriata) pardons his death penalty and orders him to watch the movements of the samurai Toda Akiya (played by Koji Yakuza), who lives in a small village outside the castle. Toda, a former provincial governor, was a childhood friend of the elder. Seven years ago, he was accused of having an affair with the feudal lord's concubine (played by Shinobu Terashima) and faced punishment. Since Akiya was responsible for writing the genealogy of the Hane domain, the feudal lord ordered him to complete the genealogy within ten years, and to commit seppuku on the day of its completion. Filled with various doubts, Shozaburo meets the calm and composed Akiya, along with his wife Orie (played by Mieko Harada), daughter Kaoru (played by Maki Horikita), and young samurai Ikutaro (played by Haruto Yoshida). As they interact, Shozaburo gradually becomes influenced by Akiya's character, and while investigating the events from seven years ago, he uncovers some truths that have been intentionally concealed...This film is adapted from the work "Aki no Higurashi" by author Rin Yamamuro.
