98-year-old Grace Lee Boggs is a writer, activist, and philosopher living in Detroit. This documentary, "American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs," explores her thoughts, activism, and life. Grace was born in 1915 to immigrant parents who ran a Chinese restaurant. Though she grew up comfortably, she felt a need for social change. She graduated from Barnard College, later studying philosophy at Bryn Mawr, and received her Ph.D. in 1940. Due to the circumstances faced by minorities in American society at the time, she took a low-paying job at the philosophical library at the University of Chicago after graduation. She inadvertently witnessed African Americans protesting in her rented area, which led her to focus on and participate in the civil rights movement for African Americans fighting for equal rights. Later, she moved to Detroit, home to a large number of auto workers, and married James Boggs, an activist for workers' rights. During her honeymoon with her new husband, she had to spend a night in the car because segregation laws at the time prevented her African American husband from checking into a motel. She became part of the African American community and engaged in local civil rights movements. Grace's thinking is heavily influenced by Hegelian dialectics and Marx's theories of social development. Her ideas have continuously evolved, and today she advocates for non-violence, placing a "No War" sign on her lawn. She believes that hope should not be placed in leaders, and change should start from within. Even at an advanced age, she organizes the "Detroit Summer" and "Community Garden" projects, working towards community rebuilding in a declining city.
