Nominated for Best Documentary at the 2012 Chicago International Film Festival “Golden Hugo Award.” Directed by Dheeraj Akolkar, this documentary captures the creative journey behind the legendary Ingmar Bergman, who has influenced countless filmmakers. The film uses love letters Bergman wrote to his muse, Liv Ullmann, interwoven with important works and classic behind-the-scenes footage, guiding the audience through a legendary cinematic romance. The legendary actress Liv Ullmann, who shared a 42-year friendship with Ingmar Bergman, reflects on this romantic relationship through the letters Bergman wrote to her, describing their love as "a connection of love and pain"… In 1965, while filming what is widely recognized as his most mysterious film, "Persona," Bergman met the shy Liv Ullmann. At the time, both were in separate marriages, but their passion ignited uncontrollably. They lived together for five years, had one daughter, and collaborated on twelve film projects. Liv also quotes from her autobiography "Changing" in this documentary, adding a more intimate touch. Several collaborators who created classic films with Bergman, including Bibi Andersson and Ingrid Thulin (who also had romantic relationships with Bergman), attest to the nearly half-century journey of this legendary cinematic romance… "Liv and Ingmar" (Liv and Ingmar, Dheeraj Akolkar, 2012) Directed by the emerging Indian filmmaker Akolkar, the documentary "Liv and Ingmar" brings together an international team and is based on Liv Ullmann's autobiography "Changing." Through excerpts from the book, the letters Bergman wrote to Liv, and interview footage with Liv, it creates a dialogue between Liv and the late master Bergman (through recordings or footage), matched precisely with corresponding segments from Bergman's classic films, showcasing unique creativity. The film primarily filmed interviews at Bergman's residence on Farö Island in Sweden, beautifully picturesque and deeply haunting. Through Liv Ullmann's clear and pure blue eyes and slow, heartfelt expressions, we are invited to see the azure skies, fierce storms, endless loneliness surrounding her and Bergman, as well as the arrival of each new spring and summer after the pain has passed. The master is gone, Liv is entering her twilight years, and the legendary friendship that lasted nearly half a century, having nurtured a new life (they have a daughter) and twelve films, is reflected poetically and compassionately by Liv, with clever editing of classic shots capturing the ebb and flow of life, leaving traces of eternity amidst the ever-changing.
