David (played by Luke Wilson) and Amy (played by Kate Beckinsale) are a couple who have just endured the pain of losing a child. To commemorate their impending separation, they drive through the vast nightscape on their final breakup trip. In an attempt to take a shortcut, David turns onto a remote road. However, not long after, the car breaks down, and a young man who is still awake at midnight comes to help them, but the problem remains unresolved. David and Amy are forced to walk to a nearby motel to rest. Inside the motel, it is completely deserted, and eerie screams can be heard coming from the front desk. The clerk nonchalantly shuts off the TV and assigns the couple to a corner room, which is old and filthy. While David is rummaging through a leftover videotape in the TV cabinet, he discovers that the content consists of extremely graphic and bloody movies, yet what is even more shocking is that the scenes in the movies clearly depict the very room they are staying in! This motel is undoubtedly a perverse playground for murdering travelers and making videotapes. Thus, on this chilly night, the couple is left to confront only one issue: their survival.
