Six-year-old Haiyan lives by the seaside town with her father Dayong and mother Jinhua. In Haiyan's eyes, her father is the best person in the world, but in reality, Dayong had been previously married and has another daughter, a secret he kept from Jinhua while secretly caring for his ex-wife and daughter. When his ex-wife develops leukemia and Dayong has no money, he resorts to stealing factory goods to sell. Jinhua learns the truth and, in a fit of rage, confronts Dayong.
