In the 1970s, at a Peking opera troupe, a hardworking and innocent student, Song Yu, and the troupe leader's son, Xing Tao, are mutually attracted to each other. However, life takes an unexpected turn when a catastrophic fire alters the simple relationship between these budding lovers. Song Yu's father is imprisoned, and she is expelled from the troupe. Just when their romance seems poised for revival, Song Dehai is released from prison.
