Penny (played by Susan Strasberg) has lived with her mother since her parents divorced when she was very young. An accident takes her mother's life, leaving Penny all alone. She accepts her father's invitation to live with him and her stepmother. However, upon arriving at her father's house, Penny discovers that only her stepmother is present. Although this woman acts very kindly and warmly, Penny remains on guard around her. Various strange occurrences in her stepmother's home, combined with her father's continued absence, heighten Penny's anxiety. Gradually, she begins to doubt whether what she is experiencing is reality or merely her own hallucination. Clearly, her stepmother intends for Penny to feel this way, fostering her self-doubt.
