David (played by Dirk Benedict) is a naive college student who is chosen by the snake researcher Stoner (played by Strother Martin) to be his assistant. Soon, David learns that Stoner's previous assistant mysteriously disappeared. To prevent David from being bitten and poisoned by snakes, Stoner injects him with a mysterious serum before he starts his assistant career, which David accepts without doubt. Stoner has a beautiful daughter named Christina (played by Heather Menzies-Urich), and as they spend time together, the two young people fall in love. David begins to exhibit many strange physiological responses, and Stoner reassures him that these are just normal vaccine side effects. One day, David sees a half-man, half-snake creature at a freak show, and the changes in its body are astonishingly similar to the changes happening to David.
