Peter (Charles Coburn) is a university professor. One day, at his father's request, he goes to a nightclub to find his flamboyant cousin Keith (James Ellison), but unexpectedly meets the club singer Francie (Ginger Rogers). The two fall in love at first sight and, after a night of passion, they marry. After the excitement fades, Peter begins to worry about his impulsive decision. His father is a very stubborn man who would never accept Francie's profession. Moreover, he has already found a suitable young lady, Helen (Frances Mercer), to be his future wife. Peter tries repeatedly to confess his relationship with Francie to his father but fails each time, causing the relationship between his father and Francie to deteriorate further.
