With the death of the old pope, the College of Cardinals gathers in Vatican City to prepare for the election of a new pope. Devout believers and journalists from around the world flock to St. Peter's Square, eagerly awaiting the white smoke that will billow from the chimney. However, the election process within the Vatican is not proceeding smoothly. The hopeful candidates among the cardinals are reluctant to support each other, and after several rounds of struggle, Cardinal Melville (played by Michel Piccoli) is chosen. Yet, Melville is completely unprepared for the role of pope; he panics during his first public balcony address and even disappears into the streets of Rome. While the Vatican attempts to reassure the public, they also search desperately for their runaway pope! What unusual circumstances will unfold in the Vatican during the days without a pope? And what reflections will Melville gain during his time away from home?
