One room, two old men, a deep discussion filled with chirps, a stage-like television movie, and short yet profound themes of life and death along with struggles. If it weren't for the name of the screenwriter of "No Country for Old Men," and the clips of the two most famous cowboys and gunslingers in Hollywood, Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, it’s uncertain how many people would be interested in this "Sunset Limited." However, it is HBO's major television film for this year and is expected to become a hot contender at next year's Golden Globes and Emmys. The "Sunset Limited" adapts the eponymous novel and play by renowned American author and playwright Cormac McCarthy, who won the Pulitzer Prize. The story is filled with black humor and poignant silence, creating a feeling reminiscent of a stage play. It tells the story of two ordinary unnamed individuals, who are given the codenames "Black" and "White." They are sharply different strangers: a Black evangelical and a white atheist professor. Before the plot unfolds, the Black individual saves the White from committing suicide on the platform of the Sunset Limited train. All subsequent content is set in a typical apartment in New York, where the two, trapped in a desperate environment, engage in discussions and clashes about religion, life, death, and whether the White individual intends to commit suicide. They intensely debate whether there are sufficient reasons to believe in God, and what the difference is between a true believer and a sinner seeking redemption. 【Behind the Production】 This HBO television film is personally directed by Tommy Lee Jones, with the script written by Cormac McCarthy. This is not the first collaboration between the two; their previous collaboration was on the Coen Brothers' classic "No Country for Old Men." Adapting the works of Cormac McCarthy (Nobel Prize in Literature winner in 2008) for the screen is a daunting task that many filmmakers shy away from, but Tommy Lee Jones, having starred in the 2007 film "No Country for Old Men" (based on Cormac McCarthy's novel), is well-versed in this domain. Therefore, when he decided to adapt McCarthy’s suicide-themed play and novel "The Sunset Limited," he called McCarthy to seek permission. The reclusive renowned author gave his blessing and even visited the set. The director of this HBO film (premiering on February 12, 2011) and partner to Samuel Jackson in the film, Jones said: “Cormac spent a lot of rehearsal time with us, which was a great experience for Sam and me, but not for others, as I didn't allow anyone else to interfere. Well, (I did invite) some HBO people, but they just had to stand against the wall and watch.”
