Doctor Barbara (Nina Hoss) is sent from Berlin to work at a rural hospital after her attempt to escape from East Germany to West Germany fails. At first, she keeps to herself and avoids interacting with those around her until Dr. Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld) makes an effort to connect with her. A new patient, a girl named Stella, is brought in with meningitis, and under Barbara's attentive care, she begins to recover. However, the girl is soon sent to a labor camp in East Germany after becoming pregnant. Meanwhile, with her boyfriend's help, Barbara is actively preparing for her next escape plan. Although she occasionally faces searches by East German police, she hides her plans flawlessly. Another patient, a young man who has attempted suicide, is admitted, and Barbara believes he needs surgery. Andre decides to operate on him on Saturday night, requiring Barbara's assistance, which coincides with her planned escape. Just as she is about to leave home, Stella escapes from the labor camp and finds her...
