In his seventies, Old Tian (played by Zhou Guangda) lost his wife early on and has been waiting day and night at the Dashan River ferry to transport passing villagers. From his grandfather's generation to now, they have maintained this for a total of 120 years. Their family originally fled to this place, where kind Tujia mountain people took them in. Due to a turbulent Dashan River in front of their home, communication between the two banks was cut off, making it very inconvenient for villagers to go out—the detour was far. To repay the kindness, they used their ancestral skill—rowing boats—to ferry villagers to and from the mountains for free, and simple villagers would occasionally throw a handful of green vegetables or a few potatoes as thanks. Now, Old Tian is getting old and is often plagued by illness, feeling increasingly unable to keep up. This day, his son (played by Liu Jun), who has been working in Guangzhou, returns home; how much longer can this 120-year-old service continue… This film is adapted from the true story of the Wan Qizhen family in Enshi Prefecture, Hubei, who has been running a “centennial ferry” for 120 years. In September 2013, it won the Special Award at the 37th Montreal International Film Festival and has been collected by the National Museum of France.
