In his seventies, Old Tian (played by Zhou Guangda) lost his wife early on and has been waiting day and night at the Dashan River ferry to transport passing villagers. From his grandfather's generation to now, they have maintained this for a total of 120 years. Their family originally fled to this place, where kind Tujia mountain people took them in. Due to a turbulent Dashan River in front of their home, communication between the two banks was cut off, making it very inconvenient for villagers to go out—the detour was far. To repay the kindness, they used their ancestral skill—rowing boats—to ferry villagers to and from the mountains for free, and simple villagers would occasionally throw a handful of green vegetables or a few potatoes as thanks.
