The arrival of a visitor (played by Terence Stamp) completely transforms the life of a family. Although this visitor has no identity, no history, and not even a name, everyone in the family is seduced and driven mad by him. The wife (Silvana Mangano), the husband (Massimo Girotti), the daughter (Anne Wiazemsky), the son (Andrés José Cruz Soublette), and the maid (Laura Betti) each succumb to the entanglements of the soul and desires that the visitor brings. After the visitor leaves, the husband gives up running the factory he has operated for years, the wife begins to indulge in pleasure with the workers, the daughter falls into a persistent inner affliction, the son starts exploring the wonders and joys of art, and the maid reveals signs of miracles. Everything descends into chaos, yet no one still knows who this mysterious visitor is...
