Teresa (played by Alida Valli) is the owner of a café. Her husband disappeared sixteen years ago during World War II after being expelled by German soldiers. Although everyone believes the man must be dead, Teresa firmly believes that her husband is still alive somewhere in the world and is waiting for his return. One day, a ragged homeless man walks past Teresa's café, and her instincts tell her that this homeless man is her long-lost husband. Teresa follows the man to his rundown shack and notices a scar on the back of his head, which makes her even more convinced that this homeless man is the man she has been waiting for all these years. Teresa tries various methods to awaken the homeless man's memory of her, but all her attempts end in failure.
