James Murphey (played by Brian Krause) is a robust cryptozoologist who encounters a creature resembling the legendary Loch Ness monster on his way to Loch Ness. It killed his father and left a deep scar on his face. Twenty years later, James is on the hunt for the Loch Ness monster and arrives at the town of Sleepy on Spear Island in Lake Superior. He hires Josh Riley as his guide, and James and Josh share a mutual interest in science and both have lost their fathers, leading them to become good friends. James wants to convince Josh's mother, Sheriff Karen Riley, that the 60-foot serpent is harming living beings.
